How to Make Bolster Pillows From Upholstery Fabric

Adding bolster pillows to your home decor is both stylish and useful. In addition to being very supportive, they can be used to add style to sofas, beds, or chairs. You can make your own bolster pillows out of upholstery fabric, which is a fun and useful do-it-yourself job. You can make your own boho bolster pillows by following these steps.

1. Get your stuff together

Make sure you have everything you need before you start. What you'll need is:

  • Fabric for upholstery

  • Something that fills or forms a bolster pillow, like foam or nylon fiberfill

  • A tape measure

  • Cutlery for fabric

  • Pins for sewing

  • A sewing machine or a thread and needle

  • A zipper is not required.

Choose cushion fabric that goes with the rest of your room's style. Upholstery fabric is great for bolster pillows because it is long-lasting and comes in many styles and patterns. Make sure your fabric is long enough to go around the pillow form and have some extra room for seams.

2. Cut the fabric to the right size

To begin, find out how long and wide your bolster insert form is. You should add an extra inch to the length and a half inch to the width for seam allowances. Cut your fabric to 21 inches by 15.5 inches if your pillow form is 20 inches long and 15 inches around.

Next, make two circles out of the cloth to use as the strap's ends. The width of these rounds should be the same as the pillow form's width plus an inch to allow for seams. If the pillow form is 5 inches across, cut two rounds that are 6 inches across.

3. Sew the main body of the pillow together

Now that the cloth is cut to size, the bolster pillow's main body can be sewn together. Long-wise, fold the square piece of fabric in half so that the right sides are facing each other. To make a tube, pin along the length and sew a straight seam. If you're using a zipper, sew it into the seam now following the directions on the zipper box.

After sewing the seam (or zipper), flip the cloth tube over so that it is right side up. To make it look nice, use an iron to press the seam flat. Now the tube is ready to be joined to the ends.

4. Put the end pieces together.

A cloth circle should be pinned to one end of the tube so that the right sides are facing each other. The circle might fit better in the tube if you cut a few small pieces along the edge of it. Use a straight stitch to sew around the edge, holding the circle to the tube. Do the same thing with the other end, but if you're not using a zipper, leave a small opening for stuffing.

If your pillow form or filling has a zipper, you can now put it in through the open zipper. If you left a hole, fill the pillow as much as you can, and then sew the hole closed by hand.

Final touches

Check your bolster pillow to make sure there are no holes and all the seams are safe. Cut away any extra threads, and if you need to, iron the pillow one last time. Your custom-made bolster pillow is now ready to make your home look better.

What are bolster pillows filled with?

A long, narrow pillow or cushion that is stuffed with cotton, down, or fiber is referred to as a bolster. For the purpose of providing support for the back or arms, or for cosmetic purposes, bolsters are often firm. There is no standard size or shape for them, and the most frequent type of enclosure is either a zipper or a hook-and-loop closure. Sometimes, in order to provide additional support, a foam insert is utilized.
